The Hotel and Pub

The Nimpkish Hotel was established in 1920.

Within a few years, the owners decided they wanted a liquor license; unable to obtain one while the hotel was located on First Nations' land, they had the hotel barged to its present location. Old photos of the hotel being moved are still in existence. More recent owners have discovered, to their chagrin, that property lines were not all that important when a building was being 'disbarged' in 1927!

Nimpkish Hotel and Pub Deck View

The Nimpkish Pub is famous in these parts, and the stories are legion.

Years ago, when fishing was still the linchpin of the North Island economy, the fishers would come off their boats with thousands of dollars to spend. Many a night (and day!) was spent at the Nimpkish, renewing friendships and telling tales. Lots of laughter, lots of fun, some chairs through windows, some scuffles that ended with one or more participants landing in the chuck - all in fun and all forgiven and forgotten the next day.

Nowadays the Nimpkish caters to a somewhat more sedate crowd. Our food is well known for its quality and affordability and our drinks are moderately priced. We keep Lighthouse Brewery’s Lager and Race Rocks ale on tap and have a good selection of liquors and wines.
